 OVERVIEW

It has been 16 years since the American rock band Kansas released their last album – “Somewhere to Elsewhere” (2000). Now, finally, after the longest wait in history, we get to enjoy their latest effort titled “The Prelude Implicit”. There’s a catch, though – Steve Walsh, a founding member, lead vocalist and keyboardist of Kansas is no longer with the band as he retired back in 2014. His absence is compensated by the elevating strong voice of new singer Ronnie Platt who absolutely kills it on this record. David Ragsdale’s heated violin playing was definitely another highly anticipated moment and he delivers quite the performance, I must say. The exciting race between the thrilling guitar riffs, the emotional violin, the distinctive drum sound, the mighty organs and keyboards create the perfect experience. The rebirth of Kansas, one of the most essential progressive rock bands that came out of the United States is definitely a must-listen!

Kansas surely came a long way since the 1970s and dealt with so many line-up changes along the way, however the important thing is that they are here and what they did with this new project is absolutely stunning. “The Prelude Implicit” is everything but monotonous. There’s an obvious variety and a little something for every die-hard Kansas or progressive rock fan (or as a matter of fact every person who understands and appreciates good music). The soft but charming opening rocker “With this Heart” sets the tone quite low but that’s also a good thing – I really appreciate it when bands choose a rather mid-tempo, calming track as an opening one, instead of rocking hard right from the beginning. The absolute finest point of the record is the progressive 8-minute bliss “The Voyage of Eight Eighteen”. “Camouflage” quickly became my personal favorite from the album. The haunting intro, the captivating vocals and the catchy tasteful chorus are what impressed me so much. The lyrics are also beautiful, needless to say. “Camouflage”, along with “Crowded Isolation”, are bringing us back to the classic Kansas years. “Rhythm in the Spirit” is the exciting hard rocker from the album – definitely hit the jackpot with that one. “Unsung Heroes” is a delicate ballad that may not leave such a lasting impression on you but it’s rather pleasing, definitely. The album wraps things up with a spectacular instrumental – “Section 60”.

It took so long for “The Prelude Implicit” to be realized but I must say that it was totally worth the wait. Fantastic production, superb arrangements and excellent choice of songs which really explore every little angle of your little rocker heart! …And of course, there’s that terrific violin which completely conquered me.

Kansas are back so enjoy it, guys!
Cheers

OVERVIEW

Swedish rock band Europe has always been one of the most essential and beautiful rock acts that came out of the continent. Naturally, they turned into an absolute sensation in pretty much all European countries, including my own – Bulgaria, and quickly went off to conquer the States, Japan, etc. The ‘80s were good to them as the band kept on releasing smashing hit records, such as “Wings of Tomorrow”, “The Final Countdown” and “Out of This World”. But for me, the album that came in next – “Prisoners of Paradise” has to be their finest effort. I am absolutely crazy about this melodic hard rock treasure and to me the album is definitely one of the best rock albums of the 90s.

“Prisoners of Paradise” is definitely not as hard as the previous two albums, but that’s exactly why it’s so good. The band matured, improved their songwriting skills and found their good place, as can be heard on the record. I have to make it clear – the songs on the record are radio-friendly, safe, pleasant and perfect to sing along with. But that shouldn’t drive you away because they are everything BUT your regular weak radio-friendly pop rock tracks. I’m not even sure I can deliver it through worlds, but each and every song has so much energy, potential and such a special aura. I always talk about “the aura” of an album or a track because you can absolutely feel it when something has a soul, rather than just be an empty shell.  It makes me sad that this album is so under-appreciated and couldn’t reach higher peaks.

Each and every track could’ve become a major 90s rock hit. Where do I even begin? The absolute treasure of the record has to be “I’ll Cry for You” – beautiful bittersweet lyrics and an absolute melodic joy!  This track also happens to be one of my favorite Europe tracks in general. The catchy “All or Nothing” is a solid opening for the record with its ecstatic riffs and hard vocals. The title track – “Prisoners of Paradise” is another killer rock tune, featuring piano accompaniments that make it so heavenly pleasant. “Girl from Lebanon” is the hidden jewel of the album – powerful, emotional and intense – the perfect ending of the record. “Halfway to Heaven”, “Talk to Me”, “Little Bit of Lovin’” – all favorites, shining with such strong light!

What else can I say? “Prisoners in Paradise” rocks hard and though so many people keep on forgetting about it, I’m here to remind you about it! I would recommend this record to anyone who loves classic rock and is ready to enjoy an hour, full of excellent rockers by exceptional musicians.

OVERVIEW

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – there’s nothing wrong with commercialism, as long as it’s done in a good and tasteful manner. Somehow, I always end up defending these so called “mainstream” records because a lot of people are too blind to understand that pretty much every little tune that came out, especially in the 80s, can be labelled as “commercial” or “mainstream” or “pop”. So the problem here is not why the artists decided to go into such direction, because it’s pretty obvious – they want to attract more audience and make a living. The question is how was this musical product made – is it good, what’s the quality, is it gonna quickly fade away or will it remain timeless? So many albums from the 80s are given this rather generalized characteristic which I really hate and Cheap Trick’s “Lap of Luxury” is one of those awesome albums which to some people is just another record that became huge because it followed the late-80s-pop/metal recipe for success. Yes it did follow the formula but it all turned out so good! The album is definitely not one of those raw and hard rocking and rolling albums but believe me it’s everything BUT bad!

“Lap of Luxury” gathers together a strong selection of rockers in which everyone can find a part of themselves I think. I have to start with the beautiful timeless power ballad “The Flame” which indeed came into their career at a moment Cheap Trick mostly needed it. The song became a #1 hit and it totally deserved it! Emotional vocals by Robin Zander; the lyrics are touching and as a whole you can’t but fall in love with the track – it’s just too captivating and it hits your hard with an underlying slaying power. I personally blame the guitars! The other ballad – “Ghost Town” doesn’t have that special flavor and it’s a bit too simple and blank for my tastes but I don’t hate it. The well-crafted rock hooks “Wrong Side of Love” (my favorite track from the album), “Never Had a lot to Lose” and “Let Go” are the essence of the album (along with the power ballad “The Flame”, of course). All three tracks are energetic, spirited and have such a strong solid sound. The cover of Elvis“Don’t Be Cruel” is such a solid effort! Definitely worthy of checking it out!

What else can I say? 10 good powerful 80s pop rockers; a satisfying album full of good mood and two top5 tracks. I’m not saying it’s their best work (because it definitely isn’t) but I’m standing behind it with all my heart and soul! Listen to the tracks!

[PLAYLIST] MY TOP 10 DIRE STRAITS Songs

dire-straits-2

playtheguitaronthemtv.gifDire Straits…where do I even begin!? “Walk of Life”, “Money for Nothing”, “Sultans of Swing”, etc. – endless, timeless hits! Dire Straits are definitely one of the best British bands to conquer the world! Their radio-friendly, guitar-driven, polished sound, in combination with cheerful and clever lyrics is what made them so successful on a worldwide level. Of course, having such a talented guitar-player and a musical mastermind as a frontman does help a lot! Mark Knopfler was the main reason for their commercial success in the mid-80s. “Brothers in Arms” (which by the way is one of my most favorite albums of all time) became a true staple of 80s rock-radio music and one of the best-selling albums! In addition to this record, of course, they have a few other quite interesting and worthy of checking out stuff. They called it quits in 1995, but left quite the legacy. This is my personal top 10 Dire Straits playlist! Some people associate the band with “Money for Nothing” only (which is fine) BUT they have so many other beautiful rockers! Take a listen!

Song Of The Day : FAIR WARNING – LONG GONE

fairwarning-2I’m a ballad person – I’ve said it a million times before and people who follow my blog are probably quite aware of this fact. Recently, someone introduced me to the German hard-rock band Fair Warning – I know, I know, such a shame for not knowing them BUT better late than ever. Now, I cannot stop listening to their music and I’m completely in love with them! I kicked things off with their 1992 self-titled debut album and I have to say It was definitely a love at first listen. Of course, the power-ballad “Long Gone” immediately became a favorite and I really wanted to share this with you, guys! Please have a listen and enjoy the beautiful song!

LYRICS

There ain’t my land in this city lights..
It’s bringin’ back your face sometimes….
Memories of the thousand nights long gone…..
And there’s a feelin’ I go by…
I still can see your shinin’ eyes..
I can feel my heart’s still holdin’ on..

We didn’t need warnin’..
When we found that love was gone..
We never found the reason..
But that time we buy..
And time’s never wrong…
babe…..

Wherever we go..whatever we find..
We never made it till the mornin’..
Whatever we do…we cannot deny……
Believin’ in love would’ve ever strong…
Long gone……..

The world is on the turn and tryin’..
Crossin’ with the mornin’ light…
To wash away the souls’ absence in the sand…
And as I see them risin’ high..
I turn away to close my eyes…
I guess one day my heart will understand…

..Now it’s gone….
And we find ourselves free world..
The road…the land…
As we’re wishin’ back the time…Long gone…
When you….long gone…

The Story of Winger’s “HEADED FOR A HEARTBREAK”

winger-headed-for-a-heartbreak-4“Headed for a Heartbreak” was one of those songs which I instantly fell in love with, the very second I heard for the first time. I had no idea who Winger were but thankfully, this song opened a new door for me and I got the chance to explore more of Kip Winger’s incredible voice and persona, as well as discover other beautiful songs of them, such as “Miles Away” and “Seventeen”.

Winger debuted way too late. The 80s were long gone, music styles and directions were changing and the hair/glam metal era was beginning to fade. What they were bringing to the table was no longer desired, unfortunately. Just after a few successful singles and two platinum albums, they decided to call it quits. Yes, they did release a bunch of new stuff in 2006, 2009 and 2014 but, you know, it’s not the same. To me, personally, their first two albums were absolutely the best!

Anyhow, as I was saying, “Headed for a Heartbreak” is definitely one of my favorite ‘80s rock tunes and most certainly in my “top 10 power ballads” list. Kip is absolutely killing it with his vocals and the beautiful guitar solo is just transferring me to another dimension…And the lyrics – definitely nothing so special or distinctive about them, but still quite painful, emotional and quite relatable, as I’m sure many of us have been in a similar situation as the protagonist of this song. There’s also this unique orchestra aura that surrounds the song, achieved by the keyboard bits, which actually made me fall for this song so much!

  • The track was released in May 1989, as a single from Winger‘s self-titled debut album. It was written by the lead singer of the band – Kip Winger. According to him, this is the most definite Winger song.

“I wrote the riff and we jammed on it a little bit, and it was just one of those things that happened magically. You’ll talk to many people who think the best ideas happen by accident, and that was definitely one of them. A lot of times I’ll sit down and the s–t will just drop into my hands and I don’t even think about it. That was one of those songs,” Kip Winger said in an interview.

  • Written in a lydian scale, the song tells us a story about a man, who wants to be left alone and move on with his life, as his love has become a stranger to him. Despite that he’s going to be heartbroken, he chooses to “live again” instead of keep on dealing with the pain she’s causing him.

“Headed For A Heartbreak” LYRICS

Yeah…

Morning came and I was on my way
When you reminded me
I had too soon forgotten
It was you that set me free
Yeah, you were here when I came
You’ll be here when I’m gone
So don’t be waiting on love
‘Cause I’ll be waiting to ramble on

Headed for a heartbreak
Headed for a heartbreak

Darling, don’t wait up for me
Tonight I won’t be home
You’ve become a stranger
I just got to be alone
Don’t need nobody on my side
To dull the blade I’m on
So don’t be waiting on love
‘Cause I’ll be waiting to ramble on

Headed for a heartbreak
Headed for a heartbreak
Headed for a heartbreak

It’s not a mistake
Don’t you think I can feel the pain?
I walk away, to live again…

Headed for a heartbreak
Headed for a heartbreak (Don’t make me hurt you)
Headed for a heartbreak (‘Cause I love you…)
Headed for a heartbreak

Don’t you think I feel the pain?

Rock & Roll Interviews Gone Wrong!

It must be so difficult to get an interview from a rockstar! Especially back in the days, when the majority of them were not even able to speak properly due to the heavy amounts of drugs consumed before that. Not to mention the whole “wild, egoistical, bad boy, do-whatever-you-want” attitude that was spreading like a disease among all the rock acts. I’ve watched plenty of interviews that went so wrong, that you can’t but ask yourself why would someone become a public figure when they can’t even sit straight for two minutes and attentively answer a few questions in respect to the fans!? Anyhow, recently I watched this brilliant compilation of rock&roll interviews that went completely rogue and decided to share it with you, guys.

In case you haven’t watched the infamous Sex Pistols interview that lasted for a few seconds or seen how stoned Ozzy and Iggy can get, now’s the chance!

Remember The Time VAN HALEN Reunited With DAVID LEE ROTH On MTV’s 1996 Awards?

Van Halen 1996 MTV

Huge thanks to UltimateClassicRock for reminding me of this precious Van Halen moment! 20 Years ago, one of my most favorite rock bands of all time briefly reunited on the stage of MTV to present an award for Best Male Music Video.

The crowd went crazy, the moment they saw guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony, alongside David Lee Roth. However, if you watch the whole appearance, you can easily spot the obvious estrangement and hidden tension between the members of the band. David’s a showman; he demands attention and gets it at all costs. I love him, however he just wanted that night to be all about him, instead of getting down to business – the MTV awards. At one point, Eddie was too embarrassed, so he physically pulled David away from the microphone.

Van Halen - the best of volume 1Van Halen had no intention of getting back with David on a permanent basis. The MTV guest appearance was simply part of their promotional activities for Best Of – Volume 1. The foursome even recorded two new songs for the compilation albumMe Wise Magic” and “Can’t Get This Stuff No More.”

Earlier that year, Sammy Hagar – their second frontman, left the band under questionable circumstances and it was the perfect time to briefly take David back in to record the surprise new songs for the album.

Watch their reunion below:

The Story of Scorpions’ Beautiful Ballad “SEND ME AN ANGEL”

I have always enjoyed Scorpions’ ballads and have always considered them as one of the biggest masters of ballad songs in rock. Klaus Meine has such a beautiful voice and somehow he always manages to play with my emotional state with every word he sings. It’s hard to point out a specific (ballad) song of Scorpions I consider as my favorite, however I saw them live this summer in Bulgaria and their performance of “Send me an Angel” just blew me away. Maybe it was the people singing together, the lights, the whole atmosphere and the gorgeous song itself, of course, but I felt so touched and became too emotional all of a sudden (even dropped a tear or two). To me, this moment was the highlight of the night and the moment I realized that this song would make its own special place in my heart.

One of the reasons why “Send me an Angel” affects me and so many other fans around the world so much is the sincere and powerful vocal delivery of Klaus. I mean, just listen to the song – his voice is so passionate, expressive and honest. Definitely one of the greatest rock singers!

– “Send me an Angel” was recorded for their 11th studio album – “Crazy World”, released in 1990. It was written by Klaus Meine and composed by Rudolf Schenker.

– “Send me an Angel” and “Winds of Change” became the two signature tracks from “Crazy World” and two of the biggest hits of Scorpions.

The track reached #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. (I mean, really?) However, in Europe, it got to much higher chart positions – #2 in Belgium, #3 in Poland, #4 in Denmark, etc.

– The lyrics of “Send me an Angel” may be a bit difficult to interpret, mainly because the words are quite cosmic and biblical – I feel like the whole song is a prayer to a much higher power and the words of a person who hopes for the dark days to be over. On one side, I believe this song as an appeal to God, to send the protagonist an angel to guide him through the darkness and shadows. Growing up, we face a lot of challenges and make a lot of wrong choices. The singer is asking for help. “The land of the morning star” is basically Lucifer’s land, a.k.a hell (isn’t it?). The song is full of biblical references and it makes it so hard for us to find the true meaning, however, I still think that it’s a song that tells us to believe in ourselves, and always hear the voices from deep inside that can help us overcome the dark times and find the right path in life.

Acoustic Performance of “Send me an Angel”

“Send me an Angel” Lyrics

The wise man said just walk this way

To the dawn of the light
The wind will blow into your face
As the years pass you by

Hear this voice from deep inside
It’s the call of your heart
Close your eyes and you will find
The passage out of the dark

Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

The wise man said just find your place
In the eye of the storm
Seek the roses along the way
Just beware of the thorns

Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

The wise man said just raise your hand
And reach out for the spell
Find the door to the promised land
Just believe in yourself

Hear this voice from deep inside
It’s the call of your heart
Close your eyes and you will find
The way out of the dark

[4x]
Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

[PLAYLIST] 10 Classic Rock Songs About SCHOOL

RockNrollHigh School - RamonesSince my semester starts tomorrow – 1st of September, I decided that it’s only right to prepare this playlist of 10 classic rock songs about school. I’m not sure how I feel about this new beginning, cause on top of everything it’s my final semester before graduation, but why not kick it off with a huge rock blast? To everyone who will start school or university tomorrow or any time soon (cause of course, it depends on the country), I wish a lovely new beginning and many new open doors and opportunities! Don’t forget to study hard, be responsible and dream big! Also, try to make new friends and explore new adventures! University/school times are the best ones, believe me! Cheers to the new semester and getting all the As!

Alice Cooper – School’s Out (1972)

Summer is definitely over and I wish it’s vacation time already! Till then, enjoy the killer riffs and energetic vibe, coming out of this 70s classic by Alice Cooper.

Van Halen – Hot for Teacher (1984)

This one comes from Van Halen’s infamous 1984 album and it tells us a story of a young man’s hots for his female teacher. Not so sure about the appropriateness of the music video, however the song rocks quite hard!

The Ramones – Rock ‘n’ Roll High School (1979)

This one has to be my favorite, not only because I adore The Ramones, but because it’s so energetic and uplifting. The lyrics are, naturally, representing the punk perspective of school – they just want to have their kicks and chicks and not taught “how to be a fool”. The movie is very cute as well, in case you haven’t watched it, you totally should.

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall (1979)

A lot of skepticism and negative representation of teachers and school institutions come from Roger Waters in this track. Teachers, leave them kids alone and let them fly! The whole desperate atmosphere is highlighted by the voices of the children themselves, who sing “We Don’t need no Education!”

Motley Crue – Smokin’ in the Boys Room (1985)

The original version of this track comes from Brownsville Station, released in 1973 but I do prefer this one. Getting caught “smokin’ in the boys room” at school would “surely be the death of us all.”

Nirvana – School (1989)

Another one of my personal favorites on this list. Quite the rocker, actually! School may not be the most pleasant place for some people who are always troubled…

The Police – Don’t Stand So Close To Me (1980)

Very suggestive song – another one of those, telling the story of a student having a crush on the teacher. You know, Sting was actually a teacher once…Maybe he’s singing from experience.

The Kinks – The Hard Way (1975)

Their entire “Schoolboys in Disgrace”, 1975 album is basically a plotline on real school experiences of Dave Davies. This song is actually written from the perspective of a teacher who says, “Boys like you were born to waste. You never listen to a word I say… No matter what I do or say, You’re much too dumb to educate…”

Sam Cooke – Wonderful World (1960)

School and romance go hand in hand…Just like Sam Cooke sings, some students may not be so good in history or geometry, but they can be pretty good boyfriends 🙂

Chuck Berry – School Days (1957)

This late 50s classic by Chuck Berry simply tells us about a school day – with all of its expectations, adventures, agonies and horrors. “Ring ring goes the bell, The cook in the lunchroom’s ready to sell, You’re lucky if you can find a seat, You’re fortunate if you have time to eat, Back in the classroom open your books, Gee but the teacher don’t know how mean she looks.”

[+] Bonus Tracks

The Replacements – F**K School (1982)

The Beach Boys – Be True to Your School (1963)
