I’m a ballad person – I’ve said it a million times before and people who follow my blog are probably quite aware of this fact. Recently, someone introduced me to the German hard-rock band Fair Warning – I know, I know, such a shame for not knowing them BUT better late than ever. Now, I cannot stop listening to their music and I’m completely in love with them! I kicked things off with their 1992 self-titled debut album and I have to say It was definitely a love at first listen. Of course, the power-ballad “Long Gone” immediately became a favorite and I really wanted to share this with you, guys! Please have a listen and enjoy the beautiful song!

“Headed for a Heartbreak” was one of those songs which I instantly fell in love with, the very second I heard for the first time. I had no idea who Winger were but thankfully, this song opened a new door for me and I got the chance to explore more of Kip Winger’s incredible voice and persona, as well as discover other beautiful songs of them, such as “Miles Away” and “Seventeen”.
Winger debuted way too late. The 80s were long gone, music styles and directions were changing and the hair/glam metal era was beginning to fade. What they were bringing to the table was no longer desired, unfortunately. Just after a few successful singles and two platinum albums, they decided to call it quits. Yes, they did release a bunch of new stuff in 2006, 2009 and 2014 but, you know, it’s not the same. To me, personally, their first two albums were absolutely the best!
Anyhow, as I was saying, “Headed for a Heartbreak” is definitely one of my favorite ‘80s rock tunes and most certainly in my “top 10 power ballads” list. Kip is absolutely killing it with his vocals and the beautiful guitar solo is just transferring me to another dimension…And the lyrics – definitely nothing so special or distinctive about them, but still quite painful, emotional and quite relatable, as I’m sure many of us have been in a similar situation as the protagonist of this song. There’s also this unique orchestra aura that surrounds the song, achieved by the keyboard bits, which actually made me fall for this song so much!
The track was released in May 1989, as a single from Winger‘s self-titled debut album. It was written by the lead singer of the band – Kip Winger. According to him, this is the most definite Winger song.
“I wrote the riff and we jammed on it a little bit, and it was just one of those things that happened magically. You’ll talk to many people who think the best ideas happen by accident, and that was definitely one of them. A lot of times I’ll sit down and the s–t will just drop into my hands and I don’t even think about it. That was one of those songs,” Kip Winger said in an interview.
Written in a lydian scale, the song tells us a story about a man, who wants to be left alone and move on with his life, as his love has become a stranger to him. Despite that he’s going to be heartbroken, he chooses to “live again” instead of keep on dealing with the pain she’s causing him.

Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” is one of the best-selling albums of all time and an absolute staple of late 70s music scene. The record spawned so many timeless classics – “Dreams”, “You Make Loving Fun” and of course my personal favourite “Go Your Own Way”. The background of the record is pretty messy, as we all know it – The McVies were divorcing, Buckingham and Nicks were in a chaotic on/off relationship, Mick Fleetwood’s wife was cheating on him – I mean come on!! Imagine the tension and the heated emotions going around the band! But still, despite all that personal drama and “emotional sacrifices” the group members recorded this outstanding record! I have no idea how they did that…
Anyhow, I really love this track but not because it’s an open window to the personal lives of two people who loved each other (though in different ways). I love it because Lindsey was a singer-songwriter genius and because I truly admire how those two managed to create something so pleasing amidst the romantic tension…
– “Go Your Own Way” was written by Lindsey Buckingham as a message to Stevie Nicks. It simply describes their complicated relationship. Stevie was quite angry with the line “Packing up, shacking up is all you want to do” and insisted Lindsey remove it. He didn’t…
“I very much resented him telling the world that ‘packing up, shacking up’ with different men was all I wanted to do. He knew it wasn’t true. It was just an angry thing that he said. Every time those words would come onstage, I wanted to go over and kill him. He knew it, so he really pushed my buttons through that. It was like, ‘I’ll make you suffer for leaving me.’ And I did,” she said for SOS in 2015.
(What a way to end a relationship with someone. We don’t know the truth, but I still don’t quite agree with putting such line in a song for your ex. It’s a bit pathetic – at least give the person you loved some dignity.)
– “Go Your Own Way” has to be one of the most bitter break-up songs ever. It’s quite catchy, rhythmic and melodic, actually and sticks with you for some time after you play it. The vocal delivery and guitar are superb! However, there’s this specific harsh, quite sour atmosphere that floats around the track. I mean, it’s quite natural. Lindsey was head over heels for Stevie but she wanted something else out of life. So, he chose to express his feelings by writing this haunting, but beautiful song. The lyrics are quite simple and straightforward – “I would give you my world if you want it, but if you won’t take it from me, you can just go your own way…”

Nothing better to do on a hot Saturday afternoon than going through the music catalog of Pink Floyd (at least to me). “Wish You Were Here” (1975) is definitely one of their most outstanding records and song such as “Wish You Were Here”, “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” and “Welcome to the Machine” are absolute classics that will never become too old to listen. Not to mention “Have a Cigar” which actually made me fall in love with the album itself and quickly became a personal favorite. The track impresses not only with its memorable opening riffs and exciting synthesizer sound effects, but with its intense lyrics, dealing with the hypocrisy and greed in the music business.
– The lead vocals are provided by folk singer Roy Harper. Here’s what David Gilmour said about that:
“Roger had a go at singing it and one or two people were unkind about his singing. One or two people then asked me to have a go at it. I did, but I wasn’t comfortable. I had nothing against the lyrics. Maybe the range and intensity wasn’t right for my voice. I can distinctly remember Roy leaning on the wall outside Abbey Road, while we were nattering away and (growls) ‘Go on, lemme have a go, lemme have a go.’ We all went, ‘Shut up Roy.’ But eventually we said, ‘Go on then, Roy, have your bloody go.’ Most of us enjoyed his version, though I don’t think Roger ever liked it.”
– This is one of the two songs of Pink Floyd, not sung by one of the members of the band. The other one is “The Great Gig in the Sky”, performed by Clare Torry.
– The song’s music and lyrics were written by Roger Waters. The track, much like “Welcome to the Machine” is about all the lies music industry corporations tell and the control they exercise over their musicians. Cliché lines such as “You’re gonna go far,” “I’ll tell you the name of the game,” “You’re going to make it,” are all written to illustrate the empty promises music businessmen make, especially to the new bands when in fact they only think of how to squeeze money out of them. The line “We call it riding the gravy train” has been commonly used to refer to the exploitative nature of the music corporations.
– The line, “By the way, which one’s Pink?” is a question many people in the music world kept on asking Pink Floyd.
“We did have people who would say to us “Which one’s Pink” and stuff like that. There were an awful lot of people who thought Pink Floyd was the name of the lead singer and that was Pink himself and the band. That’s how it all came about, it was quite genuine,” said David Gilmour in 1992.
(Roger Waters was always quite bitter and cynical with his lyrics, but that’s why we love his works so much. The song is one huge satirical take on the music industry – probably the best of its kind. I guess after “The Dark Side of the Moon” the industry was pretty harsh on them and expected a huge follow-up album. “Have a Cigar” was simply their answer to the soulless record companies.)
– The track begins with a very memorable swirling riff, played on electric guitar and bass. Throughout the song, we can hear a mixture of electric piano, synthesizer parts, concluding with the sound of a radio being dialed off-station. The effect is used to the following title-track “Wish You Were Here”.
“Have a Cigar” was a whole track on which I used the guitar and keyboards at once. There are some extra guitars which I dubbed on later, but I did the basic guitar tracks at one time,” said David Gilmour in 1975.
And this is why you should not have cigars!!! (I’m kiddin, of course) Roger Waters apparently was too sick and the tech guy made a mess with the backing vocals…

I’ve been listening to Led Zeppelin’s fourth album quite a lot these days and even though many people claim that the crown jewel of the record is undoubtedly “Stairway to Heaven”, I say that that’s not necessarily the case. As much as I love the gorgeous ballad, I’ve always been drawn to the other classics from the album, such as “Black Dog”, “Rock and Roll” and “Misty Mountain Hop”. I want to specifically focus on “Black Dog” because I just can’t really express how much I adore this song and how empowering it is to me. On top of that, it’s probably my favorite Led Zeppelin live act due to its musical complexity and even chaotic patterns which became a true testament to the band’s musicianship. Believe me, even by Led Zeppelin standards this is a very hard song to perform and even harder to dance to.
“Black Dog” Live
– “Black Dog” is the opening track of Led Zeppelin’s fourth album, which is also their best-selling album, released back in 1971.
– The title of the song – “Black Dog” has nothing to do with and doesn’t appear in the lyrics of the track. The story behind the title goes like this: While Led Zeppelin were working on the song in a mansion in England, a nameless black Labrador was wondering around the grounds and the band would befriend and feed it. The song is named after it.
“Let me tell you ’bout this poor old dog because he was a retriever in his early days, and the only thing he could ever find in his late days was his old lady who lived two houses away from where we were recording. And he used to go see the old lady quite regularly, but after he’d “boogied” and everything else he couldn’t get back. And we used to carry him back,” Robert Plant once said. (Apparently, despite his old age, the doggy was quite “adventurous” – quite like the song’s protagonist)
– Led Zeppelin’s bassist player – John Paul Jones was credited for writing the main riff of the song.
“I wanted to try an electric blues with a rolling bass part. But it couldn’t be too simple. I wanted it to turn back on itself. I showed it to the guys, and we fell into it. We struggled with the turn-around, until Bonham figured out that you just four-time as if there’s no turn-around. That was the secret,” John
– The song begins with Jimmy Page warming up his guitar. He called it “waking up the army of guitars”.
– The lyrics of the song are not quite complex or difficult to comprehend (as compared to “Stairway to Heaven” for instance). The way I see it is that Plant is simply singing about a very attractive, “long-legged” woman who is obviously triggering the protagonist’s prurient thoughts. Also, there’s this line – “Eyes that shine burning red, dreams of you all through my head” which made a lot of people conclude that the song was talking about a hellhound (or a black dog) and was related with Satan. (Because of course a relation to Satan had to be made – it was the ‘70s after all…)
– The track reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
– “Black Dog” ’s sophisticated shifting time signature was intended to stop any attempts from other cover bands to duplicate the song. Originally John wanted it to be recorded in 6/8 but since it’s too difficult to reproduce it live, John Bonham would eliminated the 5/4 variation. The guitar riffs are heavily layered and distorted.
– The start-and-stop a cappella verses were inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s 1969 song “Oh Well.”
– A Led Zeppelin cover band, named Dread Zeppelin did a version of the song and mixed it up with Elvis‘ “Hound Dog”. The vocalist was an Elvis impersonator. Here’s the result, you be the judge
