The Story of ROXETTE’s “IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE”

“It Must Have Been Love” is EVERYONE’s favorite song and one of the most sensual, beautiful and memorable tunes that came out during the 80s (and then again in 1990). Not to mention that this is probably one of those timeless tracks that will never disappear from the airplay – it’s just the ultimate radio song! The Swedish pop/rock duo Roxette already had a few number one hits in the States before this song but it was “It Must Have Been Love” that cemented their position as the most beloved European duo of all time! As a person who comes from Europe I can definitely state that Marie and Per were and still are pretty big over here!! Europeans just adore them! Getting back to the song, I wanted to say a few words about it because regardless of how mainstream or commercial it became (mainly due to the fact that it became a soundtrack to the all-time-favorite American movie “Pretty Woman”), this song means a lot to me as I literally grew up listening to it. In addition to that, the lyrics remind me of someone and as painful as it is to listen to this tune, it’s also bringing me back to those days when I was a little innocent girl and had no idea how hard and hurtful love can be…

roxette-it-must-have-been-love

– “It Must Have Been Love” was written by Per Gessle – the main songwriter of Roxette and was released in 1987. Nothing major happened for the track before it was re-recorded and released on the soundtrack of “Pretty Woman” in 1990.

– The original tile of the song was “It Must Have Been Love (Christmas For The Broken Hearted)” and came out in 1987 as a Christmas single! The song also had a Christmas reference in the lyrics: “and it’s a hard Christmas day” which later on changed into “and it’s a hard winter’s day” when they recorded it for “Pretty Woman”.

“It Must Have Been Love (Christmas For The Broken Hearted)” VIDEO

– After the enormous success of “Pretty Woman”, the track conquered all the charts and was simply everywhere! It made almost half a billion dollars worldwide and not to mention that in 2014, Per got an award from BMI for the track’s five millionth radio play! The soundtrack of the movie also went on to be certified three times platinum by the RIAA!! To sum up, you must have it!

pretty-woman

– Let’s talk about the touching but painful lyrics… It’s a beautiful song to listen to, till the day you finally experience the story told in those words and believe me, the majority of people have experienced it (including myself)…And then, you realize that you should have fought harder and should’ve never let this person you loved walk away from you. This song is about regret – regret over the fact that somehow, you lost your love and now you are lonely, your heart is cold and you don’t know what to do… You wish for him/her to return back to you but it’s too late – all you can do is dream about those beautiful days. Life is just too cruel! (…and there we go, the tears are coming…)

“It Must Have Been Love” MUSIC VIDEO

…and this beautiful live performance I would like you guys to watch!

“It Must Have Been Love” Lyrics

Lay a whisper on my pillow,
Leave the winter on the ground.
I wake up lonely, there’s air of silence
In the bedroom and all around

Touch me now, I close my eyes and dream away.

It must have been love but it’s over now.
It must have been good but I lost it somehow.
It must have been love but it’s over now.
From the moment we touched, ’til the time had run out.

Make-believing we’re together
That I’m sheltered by your heart.
But in and outside I’ve turned to water
Like a teardrop in your palm.

And it’s a hard winter’s day, I dream away.

It must have been love but it’s over now.
It was all that I wanted, now I’m living without.
It must have been love but it’s over now,
It’s where the water flows, it’s where the wind blows.

It must have been love but it’s over now.
It must have been good but I lost it somehow.
It must have been love but it’s over now.
From the moment we touched, ’til the time had run out.

Yeah, it must have been love but it’s over now.
It was all that I wanted, now I’m living without.
It must have been love but it’s over now,
It’s where the water flows, it’s where the wind blows.

[’80s Rock Song of The Day] SURVIVOR – CAN’T LET YOU GO

The last song from Survivor‘s 1986 album “When Seconds Count” has to be one of the finest moments of the album and definitely one of my favorite Survivor songs of all time! I am extremely biased when it comes to Survivor because I love them to the moon and back, so don’t get surprised by the way I speak about them! From start to finish, this record is pure melodic euphoria and it deserves to be listened from start to finish! (I will make a publication, especially for “When Seconds Count” anytime soon)…

Let’s talk about this gorgeous song, though! The lyrics are what made it so captivating, at least to me! I mean, look at these lines…It’s such a fine line I walk on the wire. Your hearts a magnet pulling me to the fire. Girls like you are hard to shake, like habits hard as hell to break
It might be my mistake but I need you tonight”…And then of course we have the stunning out-of-this-world voice of Jimi Jamison, sending me to another realm … It’s a beautiful rocker and I hope you guys will enjoy it as much as I do! A proof that when you listen to a record, you have to reach till the final track because, even though it’s the last one, it may become your favorite, just like in my case!

“Can’t Let You Go” Lyrics

Two eyes that haunt me
When I turn out the light
Two lips that taunt me
From the darkness each night
I try and hide my heart
To keep my distance in the dark
What makes me fall apart
And call out your name
Just when I’m certain
That you’re out of my mind
This feeling grips me
So hard to define
This yearning inside
Just can’t deny it

My heart’s been branded
I can’t let you go
Don’t understand it
Just can’t tell you no
Don’t leave me stranded
Cause I just can’t let you go

It’s such a fine line
I walk on the wire
Your hearts a magnet pulling me to the fire
Girls like you are hard to shake
Like habits hard as hell to break
It might be my mistake
But I need you tonight
You must have something
To have held me so long
I’m not accustomed
To a feeling so strong
Don’t tell me it’s wrong
-just can’t deny it

My heart’s been branded
I can’t let you go
Don’t understand it
Just can’t tell you no
Don’t leave me stranded
Cause I just can’t let you go

Song Of The Day : BAD COMPANY – NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE

bad-company-no-smoke-without-fire

My song of the day is “No Smoke Without Fire” by Bad Company!! Another energizing, uplifting and very empowering rock tune from the late 80s! I’m not going to talk about how underrated Bad Company are, instead I would like to spread the word and remind you (or make you listen for the first time) of this awesome track! The tune comes from their 1988 album “Dangerous” which is filled up with hard solid rockers like “Shake it Up”, “One Night” and “Dangerous Age” and I dearly recommend it to you, guys! Will make a publication, especially for the album any time soon!

Listen to the tune!

“No Smoke Without Fire” Lyrics

Ooh, you’re like a book with a page torn out
You can turn from a whisper to a shout, ooh yeah
You come running just as fast as you can, into the arms of another man, yeah

But you can do what you wanna do now, tell me what you wanna say
You can take what you wanna take, babe, take it all away

[Chorus:]
Oh, there’s no smoke without a fire, and there’s no heat without a flame
Oh, there’s no love without desire, but I won’t play your games

Ooh, you’ve got the looks that can turn a head
You’ve got a turn that can leave a man dead, ooh yeah
You keep tellin’ me our love is alright
You disappear, you don’t come home all night

Just tell me what you wanna do now, tell me where you wanna go
It’s your life, you can do what you want, baby let me know

[Chorus]

Please don’t ask me why
‘Cos I can’t quite explain, I’m like a moth to your flame

[Solo]

Yeah, just tell me what you wanna do now, tell me where you wanna go
It’s your life, you can do what you want, baby let me know, yeah

[Chorus] – let’s talk about it

The Story of BOSTON’s “Amanda”

boston-third-stage-1

Huge fan of Boston right here! Where do I even begin? Boston are definitely one of the greatest American rock bands and the absolute staple of arena rock in the mid-70s. Surprisingly, so many people are actually not familiar with their career or legacy, which is quite disturbing because their music is just so beautiful and they are one of the best-selling American bands ever, so go figure… This year (2016), they are celebrating their 40th anniversary and I’m so happy they commemorated this career achievement with a tour. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend but hey, maybe next time…

Speaking of their beautiful music, I have a lot of favorite songs by Boston“More Than a Feeling”, “A Man I’ll Never Be”, “Don’t Look Back”, “Livin’For You”, “Peace of Mind” and of course…the exceptional power-ballad “Amanda” (you know, I’m always going for the power-ballads). “Amanda” is such a gentle and heartwarming song, that can’t but make you feel too emotional and sentimental. It’s one of those songs that you wish you’d dance to with someone you love one day. I thought that it’s a good day to remind you guys of this 80s masterpiece and share little facts about “Amanda” which happens to be part of a great comeback album – “Third Stage”. I hope you guys like the song as much as I do! If not, enjoy it!

boston-amanda-3

– “Amanda” is a power-ballad and the first single from Boston’s 1986 comeback album “Third Stage”. On top of that, it’s the only song by Boston that actually topped the US charts! The track didn’t actually get a music video BUT still, became one of the most requested songs on AOR stations! That should tell you something!

– “Amanda” was written and produced by Tom Scholz – the founder and mastermind of Boston! We should emphasize that it’s not a track written for a specific girl, named Amanda – the name was chosen because it fits so perfectly with the lyrics. Also, we should take into consideration the fact that at that time, it was not uncommon for rock bands to use women’s names as title songs! Just remember the success of “Layla” (by Eric Clapton), “Rosanna” (by Toto) and Lola (The Kinks), for instance. (All of these names, ending with an “a” and bringing great success to the songs and the band, of course.)

– Talking about the touching lyrics of “Amanda”, simply put, Brad Delp is singing about telling “I Love You” to his love for the first time. It’s a song about realizing that you’re truly in love with someone and you want to share your life with this person and you cannot hide it anymore. Everyone can find themselves in those lyrics… It just doesn’t matter if it’s too soon or if you can take the other person by surprise…if you feel it with your heart and soul, you should do it! Tomorrow might be too late! Never be afraid of telling someone you love them!

Listen to “Amanda” below:

“Amanda” Lyrics

Babe, tomorrow’s so far away
There’s something I just have to say
I don’t think I can hide what I’m feelin’ inside
Another day, knowin’ I love you
And I, I’m getting too close again
I don’t want to see it end
If I tell you tonight will you turn out the light
And walk away knowin’ I love you?

I’m gonna take you by surprise and make you realize,
Amanda
I’m gonna tell you right away, I can’t wait another day,
Amanda
I’m gonna say it like a man and make you understand
Amanda
I love you

And I feel like today’s the day
I’m lookin’ for the words to say
Do you wanna be free, are you ready for me
To feel this way
I don’t wanna lose you
So, it may be too soon, I know
The feeling takes so long to grow
If I tell you today will you turn me away
And let me go?
I don’t wanna lose you

I’m gonna take you by surprise and make you realize,
Amanda
I’m gonna tell you right away, I can’t wait another day,
Amanda
I’m gonna say it like a man and make you understand
Amanda

You and I
I know that we can’t wait
And I swear, I swear it’s not a lie girl
Tomorrow may be too late
You, you and I girl
We can share a life together
It’s now or never
And tomorrow may be too late

And, feelin’ the way I do
I don’t wanna wait my whole life through
To say I’m in love with you…

Unfortunately, Brad Delp died in 2004 but here’s a live video from Boston’s 2016 tour with their new lead singer Tommy DeCarlo, performing “Amanda”.

[PLAYLIST] 10 Beautiful Ballads by Alice Cooper

alice-cooper-2

Contrary to the popular belief, Alice Cooper is so much more than outrageous theatrics, tons of makeup and hard solid rock n roll. Yes, he is the inventor of the so called “shock rock” and he’s indeed one of the craziest rockstars out there but that’s not all, definitely. I always judge rock artists based on their ballads – that’s just me, definitely not saying that everyone should do that, I’m just a rock ballad person. Let me tell you something, behind all of the blood, madness and beautiful rock music, Alice Cooper is a very powerful balladeer. Even though he always tries to include a ballad or two in his albums, that’s not what people remember him for or what brought fame and success to his name. If you don’t believe me, just ask people whether they can name a ballad by Alice Cooper!? (oh and by the way, “Poison” is not a ballad!!!) His soft and tender songs barely got noticed on the charts as well! That’s quite the shame because he has a very strong ballad voice that changes everything…

Since many of you guys might not be so familiar with (many) Alice Cooper’s ballads, I decided to prepare this little playlist for you. If you are in the mood for some sweet rock ballads, have a listen, I promise it’s totally worth it!

“Only Women Bleed”

“You and Me”

“I Never Cry”

“Might As Well Be On Mars”

“How You Gonna See Me Now”

“Ballad Of Dwight Fry”

“It’s Me”

“Only My Heart Talking”

“Burning Our Bed”

“No Time For Tears”

Song Of The Day : KIX – DON’T CLOSE YOUR EYES

I swear I can listen to power ballads from the 80s every second of my life…and I’m sure so many people share my opinion so let’s just get down to it…

The glam-rock/metal bands from the 80s were so many and so prolific that sometimes it’s difficult to differentiate them. Not for me, of course, since I know a thing or two about the music scene from that decade, but the majority of people are pretty satisfied with the huge names such as Whitesnake, Poison, Warrant, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, etc. But here I am, reminding you guys of this little band called KIX and their phenomenal hit single “Don’t Close Your Eyes”. Unfortunately, they are the absolute perfect example of what it’s called a “one-hit-wonder” band, because this track is their only charting hit and their biggest success. Chart positions are definitely not a merit of a band’s quality, in my opinion. They have some pretty decent tunes and I truly enjoy their music so I recommend them to you guys, especially their late 80s stuff!

Anyhow, I’ve been listening to this power ballad for the past few days quite a lot and I truly begun loving it quite much! The thing is that I’ve heard this tune so many times before but now, for the first time in my life I’m actually “hearing it”. It’s gorgeous, guys – have a listen please!

The track’s biggest asset has to be the intense husky roaring voice of Steve Whiteman who absolutely kills it! Not to mention the haunting lyrics – as you probably know, this is actually an anti-suicidal song and even though it should be very depressing and gloomy, I found the track extremely empowering. I hope you feel the same way. Have your daily power-ballad doze!

Lyrics:

Whatcha doing out in the night time
Why’d ya’ call me on the phone
Your mama can’t solve your problems
When’s daddy ever gonna get home
So you did your little move and cried
In the middle of a suicide

Don’t close your eyes
Don’t close your eyes
Don’t sing your last lullaby

There’s no one there to hold you
No one hears your scream
You live life up and down
Your nightmare’s are your dreams
I know it’s lonely when your hanging ’round
Don’t ya’ take it lying down – no, no
Hold on – Hold on tight
I’ll make everything all right
Wake up – Don’t go to sleep
I pray the lord your soul to keep

Don’t close your eyes
Don’t close your eyes
Don’t sing your last lullaby

Don’t close your eyes
Don’t close your eyes
Don’t sing your last lullaby

Song Of The Day : FIREHOUSE – HOLD YOUR FIRE

My song of the day is “Hold Your Fire” by Firehouse! What a song! Coming out of their highly successful 1992 album of the same title, this is definitely one of the good rockers from the 90s. The whole album is a true masterpiece, actually. You can find awesome tunes such as “Reach for the Sky” and “Sleeping With You” but “Hold Your Fire” has to be my favorite one! I love the haunting intro, the crazy riffs and the tough rhythms. Also, C.J. Snare has such a magnificent voice! Check it out!

“Hold Your Fire” LYRICS

I’m like a loaded gun I got you in my sight
And you’re the only one I want to shoot tonight
Ready and able the trigger to fire
Locked on target for my desire
Got you covered and there’s nothing that you can do
But say

(Chorus:)
Hold your fire
Hold your fire

I’m speeding like a bullet never miss my mark
With infrared eyes that can see in the dark
Actions semi-automatic
Satisfaction the instant I hit
I got you covered and there’s
Nothing that you can do
But say

(Chorus)

(Chorus)

The Story of Winger’s “HEADED FOR A HEARTBREAK”

winger-headed-for-a-heartbreak-4“Headed for a Heartbreak” was one of those songs which I instantly fell in love with, the very second I heard for the first time. I had no idea who Winger were but thankfully, this song opened a new door for me and I got the chance to explore more of Kip Winger’s incredible voice and persona, as well as discover other beautiful songs of them, such as “Miles Away” and “Seventeen”.

Winger debuted way too late. The 80s were long gone, music styles and directions were changing and the hair/glam metal era was beginning to fade. What they were bringing to the table was no longer desired, unfortunately. Just after a few successful singles and two platinum albums, they decided to call it quits. Yes, they did release a bunch of new stuff in 2006, 2009 and 2014 but, you know, it’s not the same. To me, personally, their first two albums were absolutely the best!

Anyhow, as I was saying, “Headed for a Heartbreak” is definitely one of my favorite ‘80s rock tunes and most certainly in my “top 10 power ballads” list. Kip is absolutely killing it with his vocals and the beautiful guitar solo is just transferring me to another dimension…And the lyrics – definitely nothing so special or distinctive about them, but still quite painful, emotional and quite relatable, as I’m sure many of us have been in a similar situation as the protagonist of this song. There’s also this unique orchestra aura that surrounds the song, achieved by the keyboard bits, which actually made me fall for this song so much!

  • The track was released in May 1989, as a single from Winger‘s self-titled debut album. It was written by the lead singer of the band – Kip Winger. According to him, this is the most definite Winger song.

“I wrote the riff and we jammed on it a little bit, and it was just one of those things that happened magically. You’ll talk to many people who think the best ideas happen by accident, and that was definitely one of them. A lot of times I’ll sit down and the s–t will just drop into my hands and I don’t even think about it. That was one of those songs,” Kip Winger said in an interview.

  • Written in a lydian scale, the song tells us a story about a man, who wants to be left alone and move on with his life, as his love has become a stranger to him. Despite that he’s going to be heartbroken, he chooses to “live again” instead of keep on dealing with the pain she’s causing him.

“Headed For A Heartbreak” LYRICS

Yeah…

Morning came and I was on my way
When you reminded me
I had too soon forgotten
It was you that set me free
Yeah, you were here when I came
You’ll be here when I’m gone
So don’t be waiting on love
‘Cause I’ll be waiting to ramble on

Headed for a heartbreak
Headed for a heartbreak

Darling, don’t wait up for me
Tonight I won’t be home
You’ve become a stranger
I just got to be alone
Don’t need nobody on my side
To dull the blade I’m on
So don’t be waiting on love
‘Cause I’ll be waiting to ramble on

Headed for a heartbreak
Headed for a heartbreak
Headed for a heartbreak

It’s not a mistake
Don’t you think I can feel the pain?
I walk away, to live again…

Headed for a heartbreak
Headed for a heartbreak (Don’t make me hurt you)
Headed for a heartbreak (‘Cause I love you…)
Headed for a heartbreak

Don’t you think I feel the pain?

The Story of FLEETWOOD MAC’s “Go Your Own Way”

Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” is one of the best-selling albums of all time and an absolute staple of late 70s music scene. The record spawned so many timeless classics – “Dreams”, “You Make Loving Fun” and of course my personal favourite “Go Your Own Way”. The background of the record is pretty messy, as we all know it – The McVies were divorcing, Buckingham and Nicks were in a chaotic on/off relationship, Mick Fleetwood’s wife was cheating on him – I mean come on!! Imagine the tension and the heated emotions going around the band! But still, despite all that personal drama and “emotional sacrifices” the group members recorded this outstanding record! I have no idea how they did that…

Anyhow, I really love this track but not because it’s an open window to the personal lives of two people who loved each other (though in different ways). I love it because Lindsey was a singer-songwriter genius and because I truly admire how those two managed to create something so pleasing amidst the romantic tension…

– “Go Your Own Way” was written by Lindsey Buckingham as a message to Stevie Nicks. It simply describes their complicated relationship. Stevie was quite angry with the line “Packing up, shacking up is all you want to do” and insisted Lindsey remove it. He didn’t…

“I very much resented him telling the world that ‘packing up, shacking up’ with different men was all I wanted to do. He knew it wasn’t true. It was just an angry thing that he said. Every time those words would come onstage, I wanted to go over and kill him. He knew it, so he really pushed my buttons through that. It was like, ‘I’ll make you suffer for leaving me.’ And I did,” she said for SOS in 2015.

(What a way to end a relationship with someone. We don’t know the truth, but I still don’t quite agree with putting such line in a song for your ex. It’s a bit pathetic – at least give the person you loved some dignity.)

– “Go Your Own Way” has to be one of the most bitter break-up songs ever. It’s quite catchy, rhythmic and melodic, actually and sticks with you for some time after you play it. The vocal delivery and guitar are superb! However, there’s this specific harsh, quite sour atmosphere that floats around the track. I mean, it’s quite natural. Lindsey was head over heels for Stevie but she wanted something else out of life. So, he chose to express his feelings by writing this haunting, but beautiful song. The lyrics are quite simple and straightforward – “I would give you my world if you want it, but if you won’t take it from me, you can just go your own way…”

Go Your Own Way Lyrics

Loving you
Isn’t the right thing to do
How can I ever change things that I feel?

If I could
Baby I’d give you my world
How can I
When you won’t take it from me?

You can go your own way
Go your own way
You can call it another lonely day
You can go your own way
Go your own way

Tell me why
Everything turned around
Packing up
Shacking up’s all you wanna do

If I could
Baby I’d give you my world
Open up
Everything’s waiting for you

You can go your own way
Go your own way
You can call it another lonely day
You can go your own way
Go your own way

The Story of Scorpions’ Beautiful Ballad “SEND ME AN ANGEL”

I have always enjoyed Scorpions’ ballads and have always considered them as one of the biggest masters of ballad songs in rock. Klaus Meine has such a beautiful voice and somehow he always manages to play with my emotional state with every word he sings. It’s hard to point out a specific (ballad) song of Scorpions I consider as my favorite, however I saw them live this summer in Bulgaria and their performance of “Send me an Angel” just blew me away. Maybe it was the people singing together, the lights, the whole atmosphere and the gorgeous song itself, of course, but I felt so touched and became too emotional all of a sudden (even dropped a tear or two). To me, this moment was the highlight of the night and the moment I realized that this song would make its own special place in my heart.

One of the reasons why “Send me an Angel” affects me and so many other fans around the world so much is the sincere and powerful vocal delivery of Klaus. I mean, just listen to the song – his voice is so passionate, expressive and honest. Definitely one of the greatest rock singers!

– “Send me an Angel” was recorded for their 11th studio album – “Crazy World”, released in 1990. It was written by Klaus Meine and composed by Rudolf Schenker.

– “Send me an Angel” and “Winds of Change” became the two signature tracks from “Crazy World” and two of the biggest hits of Scorpions.

The track reached #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. (I mean, really?) However, in Europe, it got to much higher chart positions – #2 in Belgium, #3 in Poland, #4 in Denmark, etc.

– The lyrics of “Send me an Angel” may be a bit difficult to interpret, mainly because the words are quite cosmic and biblical – I feel like the whole song is a prayer to a much higher power and the words of a person who hopes for the dark days to be over. On one side, I believe this song as an appeal to God, to send the protagonist an angel to guide him through the darkness and shadows. Growing up, we face a lot of challenges and make a lot of wrong choices. The singer is asking for help. “The land of the morning star” is basically Lucifer’s land, a.k.a hell (isn’t it?). The song is full of biblical references and it makes it so hard for us to find the true meaning, however, I still think that it’s a song that tells us to believe in ourselves, and always hear the voices from deep inside that can help us overcome the dark times and find the right path in life.

Acoustic Performance of “Send me an Angel”

“Send me an Angel” Lyrics

The wise man said just walk this way

To the dawn of the light
The wind will blow into your face
As the years pass you by

Hear this voice from deep inside
It’s the call of your heart
Close your eyes and you will find
The passage out of the dark

Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

The wise man said just find your place
In the eye of the storm
Seek the roses along the way
Just beware of the thorns

Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

The wise man said just raise your hand
And reach out for the spell
Find the door to the promised land
Just believe in yourself

Hear this voice from deep inside
It’s the call of your heart
Close your eyes and you will find
The way out of the dark

[4x]
Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star
